Finding 5 Pillars of Joy and Happiness
Mary Thoits, former Director of Senior Studies Lifetime
Learning Program,
Long Beach City College
Ms. Mary Thoits has been involved in brain research, meditation and mindfulness, both at the college level and in the community. She is passionate about providing seniors with opportunities to be active during retirement. Ms. Thoits “walks the walk and talks the talk” keeping active on a daily basis. 95 years young – Ms. Thoits recently retired as director of the Senior Studies Lifetime Learning Program at Long Beach City College. She spent her 85th birthday skydiving and her 87th birthday flying a small plane around Santa Catalina Island (yes, she’s a pilot). Ms. Thoits believes the concept of retirement is grossly overrated and that people can retire to do something else, but not to pull back from society. Retirees need to continue to understand what is happening in the world and to be part of it.
Mary Thoits was a presenter at the first Successful Aging Expo and has participated at all ten events. We are thrilled that she has agreed to come back to help celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this event – thank you Mary!

Unforeseen Consequences of Hearing Loss
Jay Muhury, HRG, INST. Sciences, Jay’s Hearing Aid Center
Mr. Muhury will provide new information on how hearing aids can be adjusted better in the presence of middle ear pathologies, a discovery he presented June 2018 and is now internationally available. The far reaching effects of such adjustments pave the way for better adaptation, improved communication, reduced mental stress and better brain responses. A significant number of patients who wear hearing aids do not get the fullest benefit that the aids can provide because their middle ear pathologies are not considered in the fitting process. His discoveries can help millions of such patients.
Jay Muhury has been a hearing aid specialist, and an auditory researcher since 1997. Jay’s knowledge of hearing technology, patient care, and hearing rehabilitation is unsurpassed and he regularly disseminates new updates in the field of hearing aid audiology. Jay also has a very comprehensive rehabilitation program for new hearing aid wearers that ensures success in the fittings of new hearing aids. He is known for his knowledge in brain performance and auditory functions and is working on microchip sensor hearing aid fittings. Jay has had his hearing practice in Long Beach since 2003 and has performed over 4000 hearing aid fittings. Demystifying the Stigma of Medicinal Cannabis
Patricia Sandt, Vice President, CannaCauses Foundation
Knowledge is power. With the legalization of medicinal cannabis, there has been a groundswell of interest surrounding “medicinal cannabis” and the differences between hemp, marijuana, weed, CBD, and cannabis. All of these terms and health claims leave most people in a state of confusion regarding how to go about finding a credible source to learn the facts about this controversial plant. Pat will help to demystify the stigma surrounding cannabis, its wellness benefits and the potential of using cannabis for pain management.
Pat became an advocate for medicinal cannabis after seeing her good friend, Aryn Sieber (who is the founder and CEO of CannaCauses Foundation and Cannaisseur Brands), go through his radiation and chemotherapy to combat his inoperable stage IV neck and throat cancer. He used the cannabis oils he formulated to coat his throat to help alleviate the pain, nausea, and anxiety he was experiencing as he underwent treatments. After he was declared “in complete remission” by his doctors, Pat joined Aryn in his quest to raise the image of medicinal cannabis from an “in the shadows” medicine to one people would be comfortable using for themselves and their family.
CannaCauses’ mission is to educate others about the responsible use of cannabis and its medicinal benefits. Aryn travels the country educating physicians and patients about dosing, potencies, and ratios. His products are now lab produced, third party tested, batch numbered and clearly labeled to ensure the quality and consistency every client expects and deserves. As a result of his work and data collection, Aryn now works with major corporations developing their oncology massage programs, which has attracted the attention of the Mayo Clinic. “Everyone deserves the medicine they need!™
